CHAPTER THIRTEEN

BY THE TIME ROBERT CAME BACK to San Francisco a couple of weekends later, more of my friends were clamoring to meet him. Susan Andrews, who was now his ambassador, got a table at our favorite pizza place in the Mission District, Delfina. Our lively and opinionated group included Valerie Velardi, my neighbor and yoga teacher; Davia Nelson, a Kitchen Sister on NPR radio; and Tony Oltranti, partner of Bob, the pianist who had serenaded us at Zuni with Valentine songs.

The mood was upbeat, since Susan had already circulated positive reports after her trip to visit us in LA, everyone expected the gathering to be what she called a “friendly inquisition.” Nobody knew quite how to begin, so Robert started the ball rolling. He asked my friends how each of them had met me, and what their first impression had been.
